I never played Super Smash Bros. until I came to college. When I started playing, I was always the character that everyone would leave alone until I was the only other player left. Then it turned into more of a volleyball game as I did my best to make it back to the main platform after being knocked off the screen multiple times.
Last semester I became friends with a new group of guys, and every Sunday night, they play Super Smash Bros. At first, I would just watch and cheer them on, but then I saw the comradery they shared from playing together, I made a goal to be a contributing member of the group.
I started practicing for an hour once a week. It wasn't much but little by little became better. We still played on Sundays, and each week I would inflict more damage or get the occasional kill. This last Sunday, I finally felt like I was apart of the Smash Brothers group. I felt confident dropping in on brawlers and sending them flying. I still don't get the most kills, but I do always get at least one.
Super Smash Bros. is just a game; however, I feel like it has made me closer to my friends. It is something that all of us share.
Finding common interests with anyone will build stronger relationships. Sometimes it takes a little more effort from one of the parties to continue strengthening the relationship, but the benefit is well worth it.
I like this example! I agree that when we can find a common interest (no matter its size) with someone else, we can develop a stronger relationship with that person. This also reminds me of when we discussed networking in class. When we meet and talk with someone and can find a shared interest, the relationship between us can grow. It may sometimes be hard to find this common interest, but, once we find it, it can help us remember each other better.
ReplyDeleteI like that you applied this to something so meaningful! Friendships and relationships take work, but that's one of the reasons they mean so much. It's always fun to find a new friend group that broadens your interests. Also, love the picture!
ReplyDeleteNice. I too, have found the brotherhood that comes with Super Smash Bro's since I have come to college. I am the terrible one but I have a great time jumping in with my friends just to be a part of things.
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I related a lot to your learning process when it comes to Super Smash. It can be hard to jump into a hobby the rest of the group already has a lot of experience with. I like the example of not just watching and learning something new from a group of people that in turn helped you grow closer.
ReplyDeleteCool Insight. It's so true that if we step out of our comfort zone though to try and reach out to connect with people our lives will always be blessed. We can build such greater relationships when we reach out and do things with people. I love social interaction, and can get so sick of this Fake interaction of just texting, or facebook..etc. Nothing beats actually being with people and doing something.
